Global Communication - 76:14

Image

Global Communication is an electronic music act, comprised of Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard. Their debut LP, 76:14 is one of the most acclaimed albums from the ambient music genre and from 1990s electronic music in general.

Originally released in 1994 on Dedicated, the album has been re-issued a number of times, most recently in 2005 in a remastered and expanded version.

The title of the album is the total length of the album in minutes and seconds. Each track on the album is untitled, or, more accurately, titled simply with the length of the song.

The album is featured in The Guardian's "1000 albums to hear before you die" list: "The West Country duo Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard shunned song titles, lest they colour the listener's response. This unfathomably beautiful out-of-time masterpiece, informed equally by Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Detroit techno and the Cocteau Twins, could be a soundtrack to anything or nothing. Two awestruck fans, Pete and Katrina Lawrence, were inspired to found the Big Chill."

this is some really nice stuff - the one with the ticking clock especially. Though I didn't like the whispering one, I'm sure I heard something like it once as being like the voices that schizophrenics hear... not my idea of a fun chill-out! haha

The Cinematic Orchestra - Motion

Image

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British-based jazz and electronic outfit, created in the late 1990s by Jason Swinscoe. In addition to Swinscoe, the band includes former DJ Food member Patrick Carpenter on turntables, Luke Flowers (drums), Tom Chant (Saxophone), Nick Ramm (piano), Stuart McCallum (guitar) and Phil France (double bass). Former members include Jamie Coleman (trumpet), T. Daniel Howard (drums), and Alex James (piano). The most recent addition to the band is Mancunian guitarist Stuart McCallum.

The Cinematic Orchestra's sound, in both live and studio contexts, employs a live band which improvises along with a turntablist and electronic elements such as samples provided by Swinscoe.

Stanton Swihart, writing for Allmusic, stated: “...the songs on Motion are by turns eerie, lush, edgy, expansive, gritty, intensely powerful, and gorgeous. Sometimes an album comes along that forces you to reconfigure and re-evaluate all of the assumptions you had previously made about music in order to realize how vast and endless the possibilities are; this is one of those albums. ”

Additionally, the album's success led to the band being asked to perform at the 1999 Director's Guild Awards ceremony for the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to film director Stanley Kubrick.

4hero presents Extensions

Image

4hero are an electronic music band from Dollis Hill, North West London, comprising of producers Mark 'Marc Mac' Clair & Dennis 'Dego' McFarlane.

They are known as early pioneers of breakbeat hardcore and drum and bass music, and the group obtained a Mercury Music Prize nomination for their 1998 album Two Pages. More recently 4hero has ventured into downtempo and Nu jazz.

Extensions is a compilation of original previously unreleased cover versions of their music, reinterpreted by a selection of hand picked artists. When presented with the idea of doing another remix album they felt a need to do something new and fresh, rather than calling up the usual remix suspects and getting dance floor club mixes 4hero have put together an album that would happily sit on the shelf of a 4hero fan. For this project they’ve sought out a range of forward thinking outfits, orchestra's & producers including some new discoveries to cover their music. 4hero played their part in the music supervision including some recording, mixing and co producing tracks on the album making the project that much more special to the 4hero fan base. The result is cinematic and dynamic in structure and styles. 4hero are well known for pioneering new electronic music genres including Jungle/D&B, Broken Beat and Nu Jazz. The “Extensions” recordings are the best way to define Nu Jazz.
