I must admit, two things I love are bonfires and fireworks, but celebrating the death of the freedom fighter who was Guy Fawkes is not on my agenda. If it hadn't been for King James the First's (6th of Scotland) betrayal of his Catholic followers (he had promised to protect them from Protestant oppression) then there would have been no need for such a plot. He was a hero and I only wish he'd been successful!

There was a great documentary on a couple of years back about recreating the explosion that never happened, so I'll look it out.

Canadians have their fireworks displays in May (Victoria day) and 1 July (Canada Day) - so it's always fairly late at night before it gets dark and therefore the kids don’t get to join in as we used to in the UK in November.

In fact we're not even allowed to set any fireworks off except on those days, but I may be able to pick up a few sparklers at the local dollar store and do something tonight.

I always enjoyed the Bonfires, hot dogs, baked potatoes cooked in the fire etc. One thing I really miss.

guy fawkes - the only man to enter parliament with honest intention, the intention being blowing it up with gun powder. i check a great site with that written on it, guy fawkes blog of parliamentary plots, rumours and conspiracy. you can get a nice teeshirt with vote guido on :)

i'm like faceless, i love fires, fireworks and all that, but just wish he'd been successful! we've had loads going off every night since last week, most of the big displays round here happened on friday

fireworks night always reminds me of when i was young, my dad used to have guns and make his own bullets, me and a couple of mates decided it would be a great idea to make what we called genies - just bits of kitchen tissue full of gun powder wrapped up really, we're in the park all crouched around trying to get this thing to light in the wind - of course as soon as it did we didn't have a chance to move before all the hair on my arms and one side of my head all burnt  burnt hair smells so bad

here we go with the full doc 'Guy Fawkes, Exploding the Myth' in streaming format. If you're a member on Humyo you can download the original avi files by searching for 'fawkes'.

PART ONE
PART TWO

great story Luke btw! haha

I saw this lad at school once deciding to hold a rocket as it was lit, so that he could aim it at something - might have been a good idea if he had remembered to let go!

I have a cousin who blew off his finger tips with fire crackers. Poor schmuck ... he is the warning to all children in the extended family - "Remember Olin blew his fingers off!" "Get back! You don't want to blow off your fingers like Olin do you?!" - much to his dismay. He's 48 now!

the neds over the way set this fire tonight and I must admit I was pretty impressed - their fire-raising skills have never been in question though, haha
