Couple want to call their baby "Metallica"

Couple fight for the right to call baby 'Metallica'
Wednesday, April 4, 2007

A couple in Sweden are fighting a legal battle for the right to name their daughter 'Metallica'. Karolina and Michael Tomaro are facing a lengthy fight over their six-month-old daughter's name, despite a recent victory, as the Swedish authorities have pledged to appeal a court's decision that Metallica was a perfectly acceptable name for a girl. The choice of name was initially rejected by the Swedish National Tax Board, who refused to register the name – despite the fact that Metallica's parents had checked several times that the name would be okay.

They say that the name suits her, because according to Karolina Tomaro she is 'decisive and she knows what she wants.' Exactly how decisive you can be at the age of six months, or what the connection between decisiveness and Metallica is, remains unclear. The Tax Board said that 'not all of the associations generated by the name are flattering.' The Tomaros also claim that an official in charge of the case said that the name was 'ugly'.

The couple won a victory on March 13, when the Goteborg County Administrative Court agreed with them that there was no reason why the little girl shouldn't be called Metallica. But now the Tax Board have launched an appeal. 'I don't understanding their reasoning at all. She's six months old and is already able to say her name. We can't just change it now', said Karolina.

As part of their legal case, the family note that there is, in fact already one woman in Sweden whose middle name is Metallica.

-------------

I don't think it's that bad a name as such - it's not offensive and phonetically it's not ugly at all. It's not something I'd choose all the same!

I'm thinking of calling my daughter "Rage against the machine" and my son "System of a down". Any comments?

I've heard much worse. But I really don't think that people take in to consideration how the kid is going to feel having that name growing up. I know they can legally change their name but not until they are an adult.

Go with System of a Down. The nickname System sounds better than Rage

I told you a while back faceless about a girl I know in Texas that named her daughter Metallica and son Axl after Axl Rose. I really feel sorry for those kids.

Although I feel the name is stupid I don't see why they should have to fight for the right to name their child what they want as it's none of the governments business.

Why not call the child Nike, MacDonalds or Walmart and be done with it? If you're going to make your child a living commercial, you may as well go all the way...

Just because they like Metallica, I don't get the need to name their daughter that (even if it was playing on the stereo when she was conceived). At 6 months old, she may be only an extension of her parents, but this won't be the case forever.

Hmmm they should name them with real meaningful names like:

Moonbase alpha

Dweezil

Fifi Lulu trixibelle

& other such nonsense...

Thank fuck Frank Zappa & the likes of Bob geldof don't live in Sweden.

I'm sure if she chose to call one of them Walmart they'd only use one 'l' in keeping with commercialism and all 8)

Zappa's child was Moon Unit not sure if that's who you meant with Moonbase or if that is another one I don't know of.

However, let's not forget the baby Apple of Gwenith Paltrow! Geez!
