Galloway demands Respect
Celebrity politician George Galloway is coming to Luton to drum up support for his party ahead of the local elections. The Respect MP, and former Celebrity Big Brother contestant, will be talking at a public meeting at Dallow Community Centre to outline the three-year-old party's successes so far. Along with fellow party members he will be hoping to recruit potential candidates for the May elections.
Luton Respect spokeswoman Hafsha Ali said the 60-strong branch is planning to field would-be councillors in as many wards as possible when voters go to the polls in the spring. The controversial Bethnal Green and Bow MP, who left the Labour party and started Respect in protest against the Iraq war, will be joined by fellow speaker Yvonne Ridley. Ms Ridley, a journalist and Respect member, came to prominence after being captured and held captive by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The meeting starts at 7pm, Thursday, January 18, and is open to all.
