I just saw a trailer for a documentary about how the USA planned to take over Canada, thereby declaring war on Britain from the 1920s onwards. This wiki page is about their nefarious plans...

So the British gov't was (apparently) willing to sacrifice Canada and hold the US at bay on the seas. Had this come to light before WWII, I daresay Canadian men and women would not have jumped to the cause of defending GBR so eagerly in 1939.

That's empire for you.

Not really the same topic, but it shows the sort of machinations which were (and remain) a large part of American politics.
