free fish friday!

Post by luke »

at sainsburys on friday;

Sainsbury's confirmed it will launch a six-week campaign, dubbed Switch the Fish, from Friday, 17 June. To mark the launch of the campaign, any customer asking for cod, haddock, tuna, salmon or prawns from its fish counters will be offered an alternative, lesser-known species for free.

i've been avoiding cod and haddock for years opting for pollock instead, which is pretty much the same. i do like prawns now and then though ...

i wonder what the free fish will be?

i've just been checking the sainsburys site;

Offer limited to one free portion of coley, megrim, hake, pouting, mackerel or rainbow trout per customer, in addition or instead of cod, salmon, tuna, prawns or haddock, one per transaction, subject to availability on Friday 17 June 2011 only. Item must be presented at checkout for the offer to be applied. While stocks last. Selected stores only.

the 'in addition or instead of' would seem to confirm its really free! i'm gonna get down there early so i don't miss out :)

theres going to be jamie oliver recipe recipe cards for the different free fish - coley, megrim, hake, pouting, mackerel or rainbow trout

peppered mackerel's delicious - I can't see why it's not as popular.

yeah i've had peppered mackerel before, and a lemony one, as you say delicious

i just found this great sounding easy recipe for mackerel which i'll probably do unless jamie oliver comes up with something better

Image
Barbecued mackerel with ginger, chilli & lime drizzle

INGREDIENTS

3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
4 small whole mackerel , gutted and cleaned

FOR THE DRIZZLE

1 large red chilli , deseeded and finely chopped
1 small garlic clove , finely chopped
small knob fresh root ginger , finely chopped
2 tsp honey
finely grated zest and juice of 2 lime
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp Thai fish sauce

Method

Light the barbecue and allow the flames to die down until the ashes have gone white with heat. Make the drizzle by whisking 2 tbsp olive oil and all the other ingredients together in a small bowl, adjusting the ratio of honey and lime to make a sharp sweetness. Season to taste.

Score each side of the mackerel about 6 times, not quite through to the bone. Brush the fish with the remaining oil and season lightly. Barbecue the mackerel for 5-6 mins on each side until the fish is charred and the eyes have turned white. Spoon the drizzle over the fish and allow to stand for 2-3 mins before serving.

i'll do mine under the grill though
