Cambridge street painted with shortest double yellow lines – 33cm long

Quaint Humberstone Road in Cambridge is the latest street to find itself in the spotlight for a bizarre road marking after what could be Britain’s shortest set of double yellow lines were painted – measuring only 13 inches (33cm). The lines, which sit between two parking bays on the side of the road, have been called ‘ridiculous’ by residents – who pointed out that even some remote control cars wouldn’t fit in the space.
Humberstone Road resident Liz Hazell, 51, said: ‘It’s the craziest set of double yellow lines I have ever seen. It just defies logic as to why they bothered painting them on the road.’ Councillor Rob Dryden, a former mayor of Cambridge, added: ‘Perhaps a child with a toy car could park there, but nothing else could.’
However, Cambridge City Council – who impose £70 fines for anyone parking on double yellows – have described the markings as ‘common practice’. ‘The yellow lines are at either end of a disabled parking bay and are there to prevent vehicles parked either side from encroaching on the disabled bay,’ they added.
The previous record for the shortest set of double yellow lines is believed to be 17in (43cm), which are between a permit parking area in the waiting zone in Stafford Street, Norwich.
