Creating a site logo

Post by faceless »

I'm doing a web-design just now for a local company which supplies tools and equipment to shipyards and other industrial companies. The guy said he wanted the logo to include the navy and to look crisp and professional, which, considering how old-fashioned his old site looked, is a bloody good idea.

There are six layers to the image. Starting with the background, which was a photo of an antarctic ice sheet, then the ship, the spanner on the right side, the warped text in the background behind the main text, and the text itself - drop shadowed for the name and highlighted outline on the phone number as there was some clash with the background.

I reckon he'll be quite happy with this and I just wanted to show it off as it's been a while since I've done anything like it...

Now all he needs is a less ridiculous name and he's set!

Not a bad banner, I'd say. Didn't know you were a photoshop wiz.

To my untrained eye that doesn't look like a navy ship - or is it? You'd hate for it be wrong if he really knows what a Navy boat does looks like. Or was he on about the colour of the ship - navy blue. :P

It's one of the new breed of Navy ships - built in Govan... they launched that one about 2 years ago.

Ok it all makes sense now. Good luck with it. I bet Archie'll be proud of it.

well I heard back from the guy and he doesn't like it - he asked me to change a few things, then when I did he wrote back 'IT DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT'. It seems the bastard wants me to redesign his entire company's identity, when all he's paying for is a website. The twat also seems to have this idea that because I'm only new in business that I will take his crap - bollocks to that.

Definitely don't take shit from him. Just explain that you can act as a brand image consultant as well as website designer if he's prepared to pay you for both tasks. Maybe he will be prepared to do that, which would be pretty cool.

yeah, I'll speak to him tomorrow and see what he has to say - he must realise that building a site is a whole different game from rebranding his company.
