Freecycle

I'm sure a few of you might have heard of this before, but it's a new thing for me, so it's definitely news in my world! Basically the idea is that you post a message on your local site if you have something to offer that you want rid of but don't want to see it going to waste in landfills. If anyone wants it they come along and pick it up. Today I saw an ad for a 17inch Mitsubishi monitor and phoned the guy - I was at his place within the hour and have it here now and it's in perfect condition.

You need to have a yahoo email account (easy to make) to use it though as it's based on the Yahoo groups system.

Neat! I've heard of this but never actually knew the website name. I think they've featured it a couple of times of the Ellen Degeneres show. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the link.

There were a few sites like this back in the late 90's, great to see this kind of thing is still going strong.

There were also a few based on the barter system, had a leaky toilet valve fixed for teaching somebody how to put in some new RAM (back in 98).

Aye, it's handy when there's a lot of people involved, surprised that's it's fairly active in my area, but most of the stuff i've seen has been crap that people don't want to pay the town to pick up as it's $25 plus cost of the object depending on what it is *l*

I have used it quite a few times for getting rid of baby stuff, VHS, leftover DIY stuff.

Congrats on your coup!

wow. never heard of it, but i'm about to check it out. I hope we'll be out of this God forsaken state and going back to Boston in two more years and promised myself i'd sort out all our shit now rather than wait till later. This will be worth checking out. many thanks for passing it along!

haha, excellent - sounds like you got a nice setup there.

There are other sites like it too, and they're always worth checking - I just wish I could remember their names!

I just found the other yahoo group - it's called freeshare and has as much stuff on it, at least in my area. I've just asked for a spare tv tuner card that someone's offering - that would be handy as my own one is dying.

are you in glasgow faceless? i did a search for freeshare and found a glasgow one and a worldwide one - apart from glasgow though they don't seem to do individual areas

i'll keep my fingers crossed you get the tv tuner card :)

ah right - I didn't realise it was just here (yep, Glasgow).

I've not heard back from the blighter with the card yet - he's just up the road though, so it would be very handy.

i picked up my free bed today - its pretty nice as well, really comfortable ( anything would be after nearly three weeks on the floor! ) - i had a little afternoon siesta to try it out :) the guy with the van i got also does a sideline in fine illegal drugs of all kinds - which is a nice bonus :D

did you have any luck with the tv card faceless?
