Soundcard issues...

I hope this makes sense...

I recently bought a new computer. On the old one, I had a program called Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator which had an audio editing feature. I used to be able to open that feature, hit record, and it would literally just record whatever sound was coming through the speakers - that's how I used to record the TalkSport shows, etc.

On the new computer - which has a snazzy soundcard that I know very little about - it refuses to pick up any sound that's playing. I've tried going to "tools" and then selecting recording sources, input, output, etc, but it's not helping.

When I select "playback device" or "recording device" I am able to select Realtek HD Audio (which I assume is my soundcard, but under source, this is all I get:

Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? Please don't go out of your way to do any research, since I know it's a bit cheeky asking for help like this, but if you know something off the top of your head it would be cool

if you open your standard windows control, it's a file called sndvol32.exe and is in c:\windows\system32, then select options/properties/recording then click ok you will see what the system has the recording option set at. There should be an option for wave/mp3 or 'hear all' or similar.

Here's a program I just got that records audio streams easily as mp3 or wav. It lets you pause for ads etc... the file contains the keygen. The information in previous posts will help if you're not getting any sound recorded.

Kate, was your new computer running VISTA ?

I have Vista and the sndvol.exe opens up the sound mixer but there is no options or properties section. The only recording source I am shown is the microphone. I can't see a sndvol32.exe in Vista.

Righclicking the speaker icon on the tool bar tray gives extra facility to go to Playback Devices / Recording Devices / Sounds. Clicking properties on the soundcard looked promising, but there was no recording option, though it enabled you to play back via the microphone .. but then the microphone would then still be recording room sounds.

I was wondering if there is anyone on this forum running VISTA to record through the sound card ?

This could be one of many reasons why people avoid VISTA .. for the tried and tested XP, which is still my preferred operating system. I have to say VISTA has been "stable" for me so far .. so this is the only issue I have come across.

Vista isn't that bad (I did a lot of beta testing & am now testing the service pack on another PC)...

Anyways, that download Faceless pointed to is great, I have several other 'Stream grabbing' apps if you don't like that one.

Realtek is a set of drivers & apps usualy found in 'Onboard' audio rather than 'soundcards' themselves, it worries me slightly that you say 'new soundcard' rather than 'new onboard sound'.
I say worry for if you do indeed have a seperate soundcard installed & you are using realtek, it would mean that you are not using the PCI / PCIE soundcard.
If this is the case, it's a quick & simple fix.

Don't worry - it's just me not knowing the correct word for something. It is actually onboard sound, not a removable card.

And I don't have Vista - I don't intend to upgrade until it's been out a while longer and all the fuck-ups have been ironed out.

FYI, I traditionally use "Total Recorder" (small license fee), but I also recently downloaded Audacity.

Audacity's what I use to remove commercials from GG's talkSPORT episodes. Rarely (1/100) it will crash, but I'm running the Beta version, so I've only myself to blame.

I'll wager there are better editing programs out there (whatever happened to CoolEdit?) but Audacity is freeware.

Mandy, I just found this item about setting recording properties in Vista. If you adjust it accordingly it should hopefully work...

Vista: Windows Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Sound / Manage Audio Devices
Recording / Properties / General: Device Usage: “Use this device (enable)”

Indeed, it was your post in another thread (I think in Galloway forum) which pointed me to Audacity. I recall you said you you see spikes in the sound pattern before most commercials when TalkSport play some pre-amble.

Thanks faceless. The problem is that the only recording device there (including when saying to show disabled devices) is the microphone. I attach an image below. There doesn't seem to be a recording device there for the internal sound system.

I'd suggest you reinstall the drivers for the soundcard - that should sort it with any luck.

Thanks. Update driver says it is the latest.

Anyway, I am now bypassing the issue by using the old XP box, or using VISTA whilst recording via REAL Player (which unfortunately doesn't have pause).

Thanks for everyone's help. Over time, we shall see if other VISTA users have the same issue.
