THE BBC has cut a scene from EastEnders after viewers complained it showed a crying baby apparently in distress.
The tot was screaming in a scene featuring Jim Branning on Monday.
One viewer said on an internet fan site: “What got me so upset was when Jim was holding the baby in the lounge by himself.
“The baby was almost beetroot in colour and his hands were clenched tight, his arms visibly shaking and his breath was catching. It’s awful.”
Last night BBC chiefs said sorry and promised to remove the scene from Sunday’s omnibus edition. But they insisted the child did not suffer.
A spokesman said: “We apologize to viewers who were distressed.
“The baby’s guardian was on stand-by throughout the filming of the scene and was given complete freedom to step in if she felt the baby was under undue stress.”
In the show Jim (John Bardon) and wife Dot (June Brown) take the baby after finding it in a church.
EastEnders has only rarely cut scenes after complaints in 22 years.
The spokesman added: “We re-edited a scene featuring Phil Mitchell doing something violent because it was a bit much for a daytime repeat.”
