Sheepdog trial mooted to save penguin numbers

Post by janbo1960 »

A sheepdog could be trialed to help protect penguins on Middle Island off Warrnambool, in south-west Victoria.

Penguins on the island have been drastically reduced by fox and dog attacks, the last count recording only 29, down from 2,000.

In a report to council, the use of a maremma dog to ward off foxes and other predators is proposed.

The sheepdog would be trailed between mid-November to mid-December and the island closed to the public.

Council will consider the proposal tonight.

How did the foxes get there in the first place? Surely if they're an introduced species then they could remove them?
