Double-decker bus carrying 56 teenage college students crashes and overturns in field
Alex Horlock
15th October 2012
Emergency crews were called to the A350 between Upton and Lytchett in Poole shortly after 8.15am after reports that the bus had overturned into a field. Dorset Police have said that six people involved, including the driver and five students, sustained 'minor injuries'.

The First Group bus, registered to Plymouth in Devon, was heading to Kingston Maurward College in Dorchester. The driver lost control of the bus which careered off the 50mph road, ploughed through a hedge and rolled down an embankment before landing on its side. The passengers, all aged between 16 and 18, were flung from their seats as the vehicle overturned.

Passing motorists pulled over and helped some of the shocked students out of the wreckage. A fleet of ambulances and fire crews rushed to the scene and the six casualties were treated at the scene. Most of them boarded a replacement bus which took them on to the college.

Inspector Neil Leat, of Dorset Police, said: 'At about 8.15am the double-decker coach overturned and landed in the field, the cause of which is part of an ongoing investigation. Six people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening or non-life changing injuries and were part of a group that were treated at the scene by paramedics. It's incredible that the majority of these young people appear to be fine after what has happened.'

Student Jade Elizabeth said: 'I can’t tell you how scared I was. It was terrifying. As the bus was tipping I thought it was a dream, but when I got to the ground all covered in glass, I thought, that’s it I’m going to die.'

Georgie Davis, 18, an agriculture student from Poole, was at the back of the bus and described it as the worst moment of her life when it suddenly flipped. 'We went flying - people were going everywhere. We were hanging on for dear life. It was absolutely awful. As it turned I went to stand up and a women came flying past me and elbowed me in the ribs. There was a girl with learning disabilities next to me and she was scared out of her wits. I ended up standing on the window with a bush underneath and it started to give way so I grabbed hold of the metal and was holding on for dear life.'

She said she saw a passenger with cuts to his hand, another woman was treated by the air ambulance after suffering a panic attack. 'It could have been so much worse. I don't want to think about how much worse it could have been.'

Student cheats death after being hit by express train while posing for 'arty' pictures beside the railway tracks
Daniel Miller
7 February 2013
This is the dramatic moment a Chinese student cheated death after being hit by an express train travelling at 90mph while posing for 'artistic' pictures beside the railway tracks.

Xiao Li, 20, had asked friend Xiao Qing to take some dramatic shots of her with hair flying back as the train raced past her in Shaodong, Hunan province, southern China. But as the Li attempted to strike a suitable pose she stumbled on the stony trackbed straight into the path of the train and was sent flying as it clipped her on the left shoulder.

Fearing the worst the driver immediately slammed on the brakes but incredibly Li escaped with nothing more than a bruised shoulder. She said: 'I felt this sudden bump and I was flying sideways. The train stopped and the driver thought he must have killed me," said Li. 'I didn't realise I was so close. My shoulder was badly bruised but I'm lucky to be alive. Maybe next time we'll do some pictures indoors,' she added.

A police spokesman said: 'It's strictly illegal to interfere with the railway lines but she seems to have punished herself quite a bit already.'

Bridge Rescue: Walker Trapped As Crossing Opens
The woman clung on for 20 minutes after the railway bridge in Florida suddenly began to rise while she was crossing it.

A 55-year-old Florida woman was left dangling 22ft (6.7m) in the air when the railway bridge she was crossing opened. Wanda Keating McGowan had been taking part in a charity walk to raise awareness of breast cancer when she walked onto the bridge over Fort Lauderdale's New River.

Witness Philip Glazebrook told NBC6 the bridge sounds a loud alarm before it rises to warn pedestrians, but it was not clear why the woman stayed put. "This bridge is controlled from Tallahassee," he said. "So she's stuck on the bridge and she's going up. The next thing is, she's stuck; straddled like Jesus Christ."

Pictures show the terrified woman wearing a pink T-shirt grasping onto the bridge with both hands as she is waiting to be rescued. Witnesses say she somehow managed to remain calm despite having to wait 20 minutes to be brought down by firefighters with a 24ft (7.3m) ladder.

Other walkers taking part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer charity walk gave relieved cheers as she returned to the ground. Ms Gowan, who is not thought to have been injured, later praised her rescue team with a message of thanks on Facebook. "To all the firemen and police officers. THANK YOU. YOU SAVED MY LIFE. ALL GOOD THINGS TO YOU," she wrote.

Worker clings on for life after angry child SLASHES safety rope because he couldn't hear TV
Gareth Roberts
Aug 30, 2014
A telly-mad ten-year-old left a horrified handyman clinging on for life – after cutting through the worker's safety rope as he toiled away 100ft from the ground. Liu Mai was fitting lights with an electric drill outside the eighth-floor apartment of goggle-box gawper Tang Chu. But he got the shock of his life when he looked up to see a knife-wielding youngster sawing through his rope after the noise affected his TV watching. The worker begged the berserk boy to stop but he carried on cutting as Mai feared for his life.

He said: "I was using an electric drill to fit security lights to the outside of the building when I felt my safety rope shaking. I looked up to see what was wrong. Then I saw the boy cutting the rope with a knife. I shouted at him to stop but he didn't listen and soon after, the rope was broken. I was petrified. I thought I was sure to fall, but the boy just stood and watched me."

Liu was left dangling 100ft above the ground in south-western China's Guizhou province with just a single fixed rope to cling on to. Workmate Zhang Pan heard his screams for help and called in firemen, who winched terrified Liu up to the 11th floor.

A fire service spokesman said: "This could have had fatal consequences. The boy didn't think about his actions. The worker was left dangling and was holding on for dear life. Luckily we were able to save the man and winch him onto a balcony to safety. The boy clearly thought his cartoons were more important than someone's life. He said that the builders were too loud and it was distracting him as he tried to watch his favourite cartoons. He has since apologised for his actions."

Dad Tang Peng said: "He just didn't think. We have apologised and bought the man a new rope. We also gave him a good talking too and explained what he did was very dangerous. He has promised he will not do something similar again. I think we may also need to take him for some anger management therapy."
