Gooseberries????

Post by eefanincan »

I've found a good recipe that calls for Gooseberries, but I don't stand a snowballs chance in hell of finding those here. Anyone any thoughts on what I might use instead? I don't even know what they taste like to hazard a guess. It's kind of a crumble dish that's baked in the oven.

I'm sure you could grow them quite easy - we used to have a bush in the garden when we were kids, though I imagine it had been there a good few years... They're kind of like grapes in texture, but sour rather than sweet.

Couldn't you just use a berry of choice? Something that was the same in size maybe?

That's kind of what I was thinking, but not knowing what they tasted like, I wasn't sure if it would work. I would think it would have to be a fairly hearty/sturdy fruit as it's a sort of crumble recipe and if I used something like blueberries or strawberries, it might turn to mush.

Thanks for the info though everyone. :)
